Symphony for the Schools

Children The Phoenix Symphony's premier education program "Symphony for the Schools" provides outstanding educational and musical experiences for youth of Arizona. Each year, more than 30,000 students from across the Valley and central Arizona participate in these 45-minute programs designed to introduce the exciting world of music and the symphony to students. These daytime concerts and accompanying teacher resources have been developed using disciplines from Arizona Arts Standards. These concerts are recommended for grades K-8.

Adventures in Music!

October 2, 2009

Take a musical adventure with your students that is sure to delight, inspire, and motivate! Join Assistant Conductor Benjamin Rous as he leads the mighty orchestra through an exciting adventure full of musical foundations like melody, dynamics, tempo, and the stories behind the music. Listeners will travel through a thunderstorm during Beethoven’s Pastorale Symphony, hear charming dance music from Coppélia, and a experience a thrilling pirate trip to the wide-open sea during Pirates of the Caribbean! This is one concert that your students will remember all year long!

Holiday Express!

December 2, 3 & 4, 2009 All 10 AM shows SOLD OUT

Fasten your seatbelts as Resident Conductor Lawrence Golan takes students on a holiday journey of exciting music including Anderson’s Sleigh Ride and Brubaker’s Concert Suite from The Polar Express! Featuring the annual audience Sing-Along, your students are sure to leave inspired, singing, and joyful. Celebrate the holiday season with music and The Phoenix Symphony!

Our Arizona!

February 24 & 25, 2010

Commemorate Arizona's Statehood with this special concert of music inspired by the land and people of Arizona! Musical highlights include Grofé’s “Cloudburst” from Grand Canyon Suite, The Cowboys Overture, and of course a chance to sing-along as the orchestra plays the Star-Spangled Banner! Students are invited to submit an essay on why they are proud to be an Arizonan – download the essay contest details (PDF).

Cultural Kaleidoscope!

May 4 & 5, 2010 May 4 at 10AM and May 5 at 10AM are SOLD OUT

Cultures collide as Resident Conductor Lawrence Golan takes your students on a musical voyage around the world! Come listen to the celebrated works of composers from various cultures – including the complete Guide to the Orchestra by Benjamin Britten. Other highlights include Debussy’s Clairs de lune, and Mussorgsky’s "Great Gate of Kiev" from Pictures at an Exhibition. Don’t miss our annual Paint, Poetry, and Movement to Music Competition! Payment in full or a district purchase order is due at the time of reservation. Please do not send cash. Sorry, but no reservations can be accepted over the telephone. Please note that reservations are subject to availability due to limited seating. Cancellations must be made in writing or via email at least thirty days prior to the concert date to be honored. Email cancellations to education@phoenixsymphony.org.


Additional Concert Information

Admission Fee:

$3 per student and all adults
$1 per student from Title 1 schools
Payment must be received with all reservations.

Concert Location:

We're in the newly renovated Symphony Hall, located at 75 North 2nd Street in downtown Phoenix.

Concert Duration:

Approximately 45 minutes.

Preparation:

A packet containing logistical information, such as order confirmation, directions, parking, and general information about your Symphony field trip will be sent once your reservation has been processed.

Transportation:

Transportation is the responsibility of all schools and groups attending the concert. Using the order form, schools must request bus passes for the number of buses required for transportation. Maps and further parking instructions will be included with the teacher packet.

Music Mentors

Music Mentors are music education volunteers and members of the Phoenix Symphony Auxiliary who visit schools around the Valley to introduce The Phoenix Symphony and symphonic music to students prior to their attendance to "Symphony For The Schools" concerts. The Mentors' objectives are to provide an exciting, enthusiastic, and musically-filled presentation as well as preparing students for their Phoenix Symphony performance. Teacher Resources

A Teacher's Guide and Concert Education Guide are developed to introduce concert information and offer pre- and post-concert integrated curriculum activities. Both guides are developed using the Arizona Arts & Academic Standards (adopted by the Arizona State Board of Education) and can be viewed online by clicking here.
