Steve Hanusofski

Acting Principal, Sol & Esther Drescher Chair, by Susan and Mark Mulzet

Steve Hanusofski has been the Associate Principal and Bass Clarinet of The Phoenix Symphony since the 1986-87 season, and was the Acting Principal Clarinet for the 2000-01 season. He began playing the clarinet at the age of 11 in his hometown Miami, Fla. He holds a Bachelors Degree in music performance from North Park College in Chicago, IL. and returned home to get his Masters Degree at Florida State University. He has also done doctoral work at both Florida State and Arizona State Universities.

Steve is proficient on the entire family of clarinets. His professional training includes study with Clark Brody, former principal clarinet with the Chicago Symphony, Robert Marcellus, former principal clarinet with the Cleveland Orchestra, Fred Ormand, and Frank Kowaksky. Prior to joining The Phoenix Symphony, he was a member of the Florida Philharmonic and the Miami Opera Orchestra.

Steve has performed with The Cincinnati Symphony, Santa Fe Opera Orchestra. Kansas City Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Tucson Symphony, Tallahassee Symphony, and the Arizona Opera Wagner Festival
Orchestra. He has also maintained a respected private studio in the Valley for 35 years.

In addition to his duties in Phoenix, Steve is the Second Clarinetist of the Arizona Musicfest Festival Orchestra, and since 2010 has spent his summers as the Assistant Principal and Eb Clarinetist of The Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, in Boulder, CO, where he is able to indulge his passions for hiking, fine dining, and befriending every dog he meets.
