The Phoenix Symphony Announces The 2014-15 Season

PHOENIX – The Phoenix Symphony announces the 2014/15 season, which marks the internationally acclaimed Virginia G. Piper Music Director Tito Muñoz’ inaugural season with the Symphony. As Music Director, Muñoz was instrumental in developing this Season, particularly the Classics Series. Muñoz will lead seven of the Classics Series concerts, as well as one Pops program and Handel’s Messiah.

Tito represents the dynamic and exciting ability to advance the orchestral art form by celebrating the classical tradition and at the same time experiments with a more accessible, 21st century approach,” says Jim Ward, President & CEO of The Phoenix Symphony. “From Carmina burana and Boyz II Men to the return of the Harry Potter family concert and the new Legends Series, this season offers something for everyone.”

The 2014/15 Season also marks the debut of a brand new series of concerts at Symphony Hall, the Legends Series, with chart topping hits from three of rock and pops greatest recording artists of all time. A tribute to The Music of Queen debuts in March, The Music of Led Zeppelin returns in April, and Super Diamond, a tribute to Neil Diamond, will be performed in May.

Additionally, the Symphony will present several Special performances throughout the Season including audience favorites Handel’s Messiah and New Year’s Eve Celebration, rePLAY a Video Game Symphony of Heroes, and The Speed of Sound fundraising concert and event with the Phoenix International Raceway.

The Symphony’s Classics Series features a line-up of superstar repertoire and guest artists. Highlights include:

  • A historical Opening Night as Tito takes the podium leading his new orchestra in Carl Orff’s majestic Carmina burana and Stravinsky’s adventurous Firebird Suite.
  • After their blockbuster performance of Shostakovich’s Frist Violin Concerto in the 2013/14 Season, Concertmaster Steven Moeckel teams up with Maestro Muñoz again for Mozart’s Turkish Violin Concerto No 5.
  • 2013 Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Vadym Kohlodenko makes his Phoenix Symphony debut with an unforgettable performance of Prokofiev’s grand and lyrical Second Piano Concerto.
  • Join Maestro Tito Muñoz in an evening of beautiful and diverse choral repertoire with The Phoenix Symphony Chorus and the world-renowned Phoenix Boys Choir featuring the music of Brahms and Kodály.

Seven of the concerts in the Classics Series are also a part of the Coffee Classics Series, which features one hour of music selected from the weekend’s Classics program on Friday afternoons.

The APS Pops series brings back memories and creates new ones with a refreshing mix of popular entertainers and musical favorites. Highlights include:

  • Boyz II Men, who have sold over 60 million albums as the best-selling R&B group of all time, bring their peerless harmonies in their debut with The Phoenix Symphony this October.
  • Holiday Pops, one of the Valley’s most beloved holiday traditions, welcomes you and your family into the holiday season. This year The Phoenix Symphony is joined by the Desert Bells Bell Choir and Phoenix Girls Chorus.
  • Get an early start to Valentine’s Day with Broadway Romance. Join The Phoenix Symphony and stars of Broadway as they sing their way through Tony Award-winner Ted Sperling’s guide to the greatest love stories from Broadway musicals.
  • Back by popular demand, a tribute to George Gershwin features “Rhapsody in Blue”, “Man I Love,” “Summertime” and more.
  • A night at the movies like you have never seen as the Symphony accompanies the film Singin’ in the Rain live as it is projected on a large screen above the orchestra.

Children and adults alike enjoy The Phoenix Symphony’s entertaining US Airways Family Series which consists of five family themed concerts designed for children ages four to twelve. Families can come to Symphony Hall one hour early for pre-concert activities such as the popular instrument Petting Zoo, book readings, arts, crafts and activities. Highlights include:

  • The return of Halloween at Hogwarts, from its 2013 sold out debut. The Phoenix Symphony brings the music from Harry Potter to life with even more music from these iconic movies and books.
  • Relive the magic of The Polar Express as this popular holiday book takes you on a musical journey to the North Pole.
  • Eye of the Tiger, a concert is filled with movin’ and groovin’ tunes of the 1980’s, is sure to be a hit with parents and children alike.
  • Fiddler on the Roof, a semi-staged collaboration with Phoenix Theatre shares the timeless tale of Tevye, his village and tradition in a one-hour family performance.

The Phoenix Symphony continues the Scottsdale Series, heldat theScottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, with a season that consists of four great performances featuring world-class guest conductors and artists. Highlights include:

  • Aaron Copland’s quintessential masterpiece, Appalachian Spring is paired with a unique presentation of Higdon’s beautiful Soprano Sax Concerto performed by Amy Dickson.
  • 2013 Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Vadym Kohlodenko makes his Phoenix Symphony debut with an unforgettable performance of Prokofiev’s grand and lyrical Second Piano Concerto.
  • Join Maestro Tito Muñoz in an evening of beautiful and diverse choral repertoire with The Phoenix Symphony Chorus and the world-renowned Phoenix Boys Choir featuring the music of Brahms and Kodály.
  • The Scottsdale Series ends with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, a musical journey of triumph over death, and the return of violinist Giora Schmidt performing Bruch’s first violin concerto.

Season tickets to the 2014/15 Season are now on sale with a variety of packages offered for the Classics, Pops, Family, Scottsdale and Legends series. Packages provide subscribers with savings of up to 30% off ticket prices to the general public.
