The Phoenix Symphony Opens APS Pops Series with Sounds of New Orleans – A Tribute to Louis Armstrong

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 18, 2014

PHOENIX – The Phoenix Symphony launches its 2014/15 Pops series with Sounds of New Orleans – A Tribute to Louis Armstrong, a musical showcase of the “Big Easy,” on September 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m. and September 28 at 2 p.m. at Symphony Hall.

Audiences will enjoy a swinging evening of favorites like “St. Louis Blues” and “Sweet Georgia Brown” along with classics such as “What a Wonderful World” and “When the Saints Come Marching In.”  Virtuoso trumpeter and singer Byron Stripling leads an evening filled with the sounds that make the Crescent City famous. The New York Times says, “Stripling is a powerful trumpeter, at ease with the most complicated and detailed bebop lines and an open-armed Armstrong swagger.”

This spectacular salute to the great Louis Armstrong is conducted by Larry Blank, a three-time Tony-nominated orchestrator known for his Broadway orchestrations. Blank has guest conducted for many orchestras including The New York Philharmonic, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Boston Pops, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony and the San Francisco Symphony.

Media Availability: Media is invited to attend the dress rehearsal September 26 at 10 a.m. Byron Stripling and Larry Blank are available for interviews upon request September 20-26.

Tickets start at $18 and can be purchased by calling the box office at 602-495-1999 or online at phoenixsymphony.org.
