The Phoenix Symphony is excited to announce a partnership with Mesa Youth Creative Agency and Madison Center for the Arts. This collaboration uses the creative energy of the Phoenix Symphony, Mesa Youth Creative Agency (MYCA) and Madison Center for the Arts to explore the powerful relationship between visual and auditory art. At each performance, we will add a new layer to the artwork, reflecting the music performed by the Symphony.
At seven different performances, the audience is invited to help build a one-of-a-kind art piece starting an hour before the concert where you will find a canvas ready for the next layer of creation. With guidance from MYCA, you can add your personal artistic touch, contributing to a growing artwork that evolves with each concert. The artwork is shaped by the audience’s experience and interpretation, with each contribution reflecting how they connect to the music and performance.
The process began on October 12 during our first Family Concert of the season, *Viajando por Las Americas. The audience started the canvas with a musical score collage, using pieces of sheet music from the concert to form the foundation of the artwork. Now, as we move through the season, additional layers will be added, using different materials and techniques to explore the connection between visual art and the music performed on stage.
Along with creating the artwork, the audience met Morgen Johnson, symphony cellist. Morgen shared her experience of being a musician in the Phoenix Symphony, details about the cello and her role in performing during the concert. All of which contributed to the inspiration used in the artwork.
Whether it is through stencils, paint, string, or printing, each new layer will reflect the music and the emotions it evokes. By the end of the season, this progressive piece of art will stand as a symbol of the shared experience of those who attended the seven concerts.
We invite you and your family to come early, get creative, and leave your mark on this evolving artwork. Your participation helps bring this project to life, and together, we’ll create something memorable.
The creation and display of this artwork is hosted by the Madison Center for the Arts as part of its ongoing support for community and youth art initiatives.
Follow along as we document the process of creating a work of art that mirrors the 2024/25 season.
