A string ensemble from the Phoenix Symphony had the pleasure of playing for 1st – 6th grade at Las Sendas Elementary School in Mesa, Arizona this week. Small ensembles from the Phoenix Symphony visit schools around the Valley to play engaging and interactive educational concerts for Arizona students. These interactive performances allow musicians, students and teachers the opportunity to connect through music.
Musicians of the Phoenix Symphony presented the “Musical Toolbox for Composers” program where students learn how to express feelings in music with the help of the composer’s toolbox. This interactive program utilizes the musical tools of key, tempo, dynamics and instrumentation to manipulate the feeling of a piece. Students voted on how much each piece made them feel while the ensemble employed different musical tools.
The music teacher at Las Sendas Elementary, Julie Willis said, “I loved that our students were exposed to musical terminology in the presentation that we use in the music classroom. The students were able to apply their knowledge to give answers and ask questions during the presentation. The music selections were a great mix of classical and well-known movie music, which kept the students’ attention and kept them engaged. My students’ favorite selections were the Superman and Jaws theme songs, as well as the Brahms Lullaby. All the students and staff enjoyed the experience, and many said that they were inspired by the performance. I plan to have the Phoenix Symphony come back to our school every year!”
