Friday Night Classic Casual Conversations: Enhance Your Concert Experience

After experiencing an enchanting performance by the Phoenix Symphony, patrons are invited to join Associate Conductor Alex Amsel and a few musicians for a post-concert conversation in the main lobby.

This is not a lecture or a class; it is an open discussion where audience members and musicians alike share their thoughts on the performance they just experienced. As you exit the concert hall, you will notice a welcoming set of chairs in the lobby, waiting for guests to continue their evening with insightful conversation.

Alex Amsel, inspired by the way musicians naturally discuss their feelings and experiences after a concert, envisioned these discussions as an opportunity for audience members to take part in the conversation. “Musicians often talk among themselves after a performance about how they felt and what they experienced. The insights deepen when shared,” says Alex. “By bringing our audience into this dialogue, we create a richer, shared experience that enhances everyone’s connection to the music.”

One of the fascinating aspects Alex enjoys in these discussions is how people can experience the same concert in different ways. “I’m surprised when someone has a completely different take away from what I felt,” he shares. “It’s captivating to hear these diverse perspectives and see how music resonates uniquely with each listener.”

Cellist Bridget Pasker recalls a particularly moving experience during a Brahms concert. “I was debating whether to rehearse or attend the performance,” she recalls. “During the second half, I found myself sitting in the hall, overwhelmed with emotion, and it reminded me of why we, as musicians, hope to bring these kinds of experiences to our audience. It’s about those moments that touch our soul.”

These post-concert conversations provide a unique opportunity to deepen your appreciation for live classical music, connect with fellow concertgoers and engage directly with the musicians who bring the performances to life. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a first-time attendee, Friday night discussions are for everyone.

Attend our next Friday Night Classic Casual Conversation at Daphnis and Chloé on Friday, January 31. Plan to stay after the concert a little longer and join the conversation.
