David Lawrence Pack has been principal/solo tuba of The Phoenix Symphony since 1973, having been chosen through audition by the late Eduardo Mata.

Pack has performed with the Hong Kong Philharmonic (1980-1981 season), spent four summer seasons with the St. Louis Symphony, four summer seasons with the Grand Teton Music Festival in Wyoming, and four seasons at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Festival in Michigan. Beyond performing, Pack has pursued a teaching career at Oklahoma City University, and Phoenix, Mesa and Scottsdale Community Colleges. He was also an instructor of Tuba and Euphonium at Northern Arizona University from 1995 to 1998.

It was during seventh grade that Pack began playing tuba in Lincoln Park, MI, and studied privately with Oscar LeGassé of the Detroit Symphony throughout high school. He attended Indiana University, studying with the late William J. Bell and became his clinic assistant. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in music in 1971, Pack attended Oklahoma University where he studied and had an assistantship to teach tuba and perform in the faculty brass quintet.

Pack’s second marriage in 1995 to his wife, Helen, combined two families and keeps them busy with nine children, 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He plays the tuba to get a “breather.”
