This Día de los Muertos, experience an unforgettable evening where the colors, rhythms, and emotions of Mexican music come alive on the symphonic stage. The Phoenix Symphony joins forces with world-renowned Mexican American soprano Camille Zamora, the electrifying Mariachi Oro del Sol from Arizona State University, and the charismatic conductor Jeff Tyzik for a concert that blends classical artistry with the beating heart of Mexican musical tradition.
“Día de los Muertos,” or “Day of the Dead,” is a two-day holiday celebrated on November 1 & 2 in Mexico, when families remember departed loved ones and create offerings to honor them. This concert brings that cherished tradition to life through music, dance, and color.
From the sweeping majesty of Moncayo’s Huapango—the unofficial national anthem of Mexico—to the tender elegance of “Bésame Mucho” and the sultry charm of “Perfidia,” the first half of the evening traces the romantic soul of Latin America. The program also shines with orchestral showpieces like Alma Monarcha, a modern celebration and Arizona premiere that describes the monarch butterfly’s migration between Mexico and the U.S., and selections from Coco, Disney Pixar’s beloved ode to family, remembrance, and music.
In the second act, Maestro Tyzik leads the orchestra through a whirlwind of rhythm and passion—from the intoxicating pulse of Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2 to tango favorites like “Por una cabeza” and “La Cumparsita.” The night crescendos with Camille Zamora’s breathtaking renditions of “La Malagueña” and the exuberant mariachi anthem “Guadalajara,” before concluding with the irresistible joy of “Son de la Negra.”
