Paul's Story

Throughout much of the 50s The Phoenix Symphony performed in the old Phoenix Union High School Auditorium, which was on Van Buren just east of Seventh Street. The seats were hard, but the music was good, at least to the ears of a restless teenager. My European-born parents did their best to instill a little old-world culture into my brother John and me and some of it even stuck, but more with John than me. But the best thing about the Symphony in those years was our parents taking us to Mary Coyle's for ice cream after a concert as a reward for staying awake while the music was playing.
