Local Student Composer Spotlight: Karna by Nevin Atodaria, Student at Brophy College Preparatory

This season, the Phoenix Symphony is proud to feature Karna, an original orchestral work by Arizona student composer Nevin Atodaria, as part of our Symphony for the Schools Field Trip Program. Through the free field trip experience, thousands of Arizona students will hear Nevin’s music performed live by Phoenix Symphony musicians on the Symphony Hall stage. It’s an opportunity to experience an Arizona student’s creativity elevated to the professional level.

Inspired by a central figure from the Mahabharata, a Hindu epic, Karna traces the life of a hero shaped by duty, loyalty, and sacrifice. Told in four connected musical sections, the piece follows Karna’s journey from birth and abandonment, through training and conflict, to a powerful final battle and spiritual ascension. A recurring musical idea represents Karna’s dharma, or sense of duty, guiding listeners through moments of choice, struggle, and resolution.

Nevin is a student at Brophy College Preparatory and a dedicated musician who plays piano, viola, and guitar. As a violist himself, he was especially excited to give the viola a strong voice within the orchestra. When Nevin is able to attend, students will also have the chance to meet him in person as he joins the concert on stage to speak about his work for a time to connect with Arizona Students.

By featuring Karna within Symphony for the Schools, the Phoenix Symphony celebrates not only professional excellence, but also the talent, imagination, and potential of Arizona students—showing young listeners that their own creative voices matter.
