An important update about our 2019/20 Season and The Phoenix Symphony

Friday March 27, 2020

Dear Friends of The Phoenix Symphony:

In my early months here leading this treasured institution, I have been overwhelmed by the warm welcome from The Phoenix Symphony community. From audience members and our musicians to staff and our patrons, each and every person has gone above and beyond to make me instantly feel a part of this special organization. And now more than ever, when faced with an unprecedented situation, your outpouring of support and understanding continues to be a true testament to your dedication to and love of The Phoenix Symphony.

It is already clear that the impact of the COVID-19 virus on the performing arts is devastating. In addition to the new financial realities, with the inability for our musicians to perform throughout the Valley, The Phoenix Symphony has lost its connection to the community on stage at Symphony Hall, as well as off stage in schools, hospitals and homeless shelters.

Throughout this situation, the health and well-being of our entire community has been our highest priority and as such, with tremendous regret, The Phoenix Symphony will cancel the remainder of its 2019/20 Season, all performances through June 6, 2020. For those holding tickets impacted by these cancellations, please click here for more information.

With the cancellation of the remainder of the 2019/20 Season, we are saddened to share that COVID-19 has greatly impacted our institution causing difficult decisions to be made, including the lay-offs of our musicians for the remainder of the Season, a reduction of one third in our administrative and artistic staff and a major salary reduction for all remaining personnel. In doing so, we have implemented these heart-breaking measures with care, respect and compassion for the individuals adversely affected, including the continued commitment to their wellness by providing benefits such as health, disability and instrument insurances.

These measures enable The Phoenix Symphony to build a bridge to the other side of the COVID-19 outbreak, and it is our hope and intention that when the organization’s musicians return in September to celebrate Opening Night of the 2020/21 Season, that staff positions will be reinstated.

We envision a 2020/21 season full of promise, artistic excellence and memorable performances. Your subscription means more to us than just purchasing a seat. Your support provides the much-needed resources to launch into our most exciting season and to ensure our musicians engage our students and community through our extensive education programs and health and wellness initiatives.

Music speaks to all of us, especially in this time of uncertainty. The Phoenix Symphony has been lifting spirits and infusing the joy of music throughout the Valley for nearly 75 years. Together, with your commitment, enthusiasm and partnership, we will continue to enhance lives, educate students, and entertain our community for another 75 years.

Warm regards,
Suzanne Wilson
