The Phoenix Symphony joins our community in mourning the passing of Laura Grafman, an extraordinary leader whose generosity, vision, and deep love for the arts left an enduring legacy. A dedicated advocate for philanthropy and classical music, Laura played an integral role in strengthening cultural institutions across the Valley, ensuring that future generations would have access to the transformative power of the arts.
Beyond her love of music, Laura was a leader of remarkable influence and compassion. As one of the four Founding Trustees of Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, she was instrumental in stewarding one of the region’s most impactful philanthropic legacies, ensuring that funding reached organizations and initiatives that uplifted the community. She carried these values into her longstanding work with the Phoenix Symphony, where she played a key role in advancing the Symphony’s mission. Her dedication to ensuring the vitality of the performing arts was unwavering, and her efforts will be felt for generations to come.
Laura’s commitment to service extended far beyond the arts. As Executive Vice President of HonorHealth Foundation (formerly Scottsdale Memorial Hospital) for more than four decades, she helped raise millions of dollars to build and endow the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center, providing critical resources for healthcare and research. Her impact was recognized throughout her lifetime with numerous honors, including being named one of the Valley’s Most Admired Leaders by the Phoenix Business Journal and receiving the Trends Charitable Fund’s Fabulous Phoenician award.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Laura will remember her, not only for her remarkable achievements, but also for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering belief in the power of generosity. She approached every endeavor with grace and gratitude, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire.
The Phoenix Symphony is deeply grateful for Laura’s advice and counsel, her dedication to our mission, and her boundless enthusiasm for the music she cherished. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her daughter, Lynn Lancaster, and all who were fortunate enough to know and love Laura. Her spirit will forever resonate in the music, institutions, and lives she touched.
