Musical Instrument Museum Collaboration with the Phoenix Symphony

May 2, 2024

The Phoenix Symphony is thrilled to share a new endeavor that will enrich our education programs offered to many local Arizona schools.

The Symphony recently had the pleasure of collaborating with the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) as part of their Artist Residency Program. A woodwind quintet of five members of the Phoenix Symphony performed multiple programs on stage for groups of students and teachers. This initiative allowed us to engage with students, offering them a firsthand glimpse into the world of professional musicianship. Students also had the opportunity to take part in an interactive theater performance followed by a tour of the MIM, providing a well-rounded understanding of music and its cultural significance.

A woodwind quintet is comprised of five musicians playing flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn.  Though it represents a fraction of the larger symphony, it embodies the diversity and dynamism of orchestral music. This distinctive combination of the brass and woodwind sound adds depth and richness to the music, with its unique blend of timbres.

The joint program provided a delightful experience for the Symphony and the MIM.

“We are happy to showcase the MIM residency program featuring musicians from the Phoenix Symphony, collaborating with community cultural partners to celebrate artistic excellence in Arizona.”

-Tabitha Banson, Education and Outreach Specialist, Musical Instrument Museum

“We’ve enjoyed being able to expand the educational experience by incorporating gallery visits and exhibits in the museum that underscore the craftsmanship behind instruments and the diverse genres of music our musicians masterfully perform.”

-Jordanna Matlock, Community Engagement and Education Manager, Phoenix Symphony

Reflecting on her time as a musician supporting education, Marium Buswell (Oboe), eloquently summed up the essence of the new woodwind school assembly program at the MIM: “I find this program to be a wonderful reflection of the diverse range of composers and musical styles we enjoy performing, it’s a joy to share these experiences and collaborations with local students.”
