The Phoenix Symphony & Musicians Reach One-Year Agreement

On June 26, 2023, The Phoenix Symphony and its musicians, members of Professional Musicians of Arizona, American Federation of Musicians, Local 586, reached a new contract, which will be effective until Nov. 2, 2024.

The new contract features a 35-week season with a 2.5 percent increase in weekly compensation as well as the creation of an insurance task force comprised of musicians, board members, and management leadership; this new committee will be charged with, among other responsibilities, focusing on health insurance.

“The Board of The Phoenix Symphony is delighted to reach agreement with our exceptional musicians,” said Board Chair Adam Goodman in an official press statement issued by The Phoenix Symphony. “This new contract will help us continue working together to reach new audiences and serve our diverse community while supporting a healthy business environment.”

“Our colleagues are committed to the success of The Phoenix Symphony, and we are encouraged by the progress represented by this agreement,” added Mark Deatherage, Phoenix Symphony Associate Principal Violist and lead negotiator for Local 586. “This is an important step as we seek to advance our symphony orchestra, its programs, and its people.”

The vocal portion of The Phoenix Symphony’s 2023-24 season kicks off this September with a performance of “Carmina Burana.” The company will also feature a Spanish-version of Händel’s most iconic work, and works by Strauss and Mahler, among others.
