Rachel Barton Pine is not only a world-class artist, but a passionate pedagogue, dedicated to uplifting students of all ages with her love of music. As a recent guest of The Phoenix Symphony, Pine performed on stage in Symphony Hall with The Phoenix Symphony November 17th through 19th and took the time to engage with the community at various outreach events throughout the Valley. She taught an improvisational workshop on North Scottish fiddling with the Gilbert Town Fiddlers, a music education and youth development program based in Gilbert, Arizona. Pine also shared her recent RBP Foundation publication “Music by Black Composers” – a coloring book featuring 40 renowned Black composers from the 18th century through present day – at Changing Hands Bookstore in Phoenix. Finally, she showcased her exceptional teaching in a masterclass with SOUNDS Academy, a non-profit music education organization that teaches, mentors and provides musical experiences and opportunities for underserved youth.
On stage, Pine performed Florence Price’s Concerto No. 2, a piece that Pine herself was only the second artist to record professionally in one of her dozens of albums as it was only recently discovered among Florence Price’s many outstanding compositions. After one of her performances, Daniel Bernard Roumain, renowned composer and frequent guest artist of The Phoenix Symphony, commended Pine’s performance and lifelong allyship and dedication to antiracism in classical music.
