See music mash-up when pop idols take symphony stage

It’s a marriage of high culture and pop culture: The Phoenix Symphony is teaming up with “American Idol” for two concerts at Symphony Hall.

Memorable contestants Lakisha Jones, Haley Scarnato and Matt Giraud, from seasons six and eight of the TV show, will perform live with the symphony Sept. 27 and 29, delivering hits from Celine Dion, Journey and other artists. Popular songs on the playlist include “Georgia on My Mind,” “Don’t Stop Believing” and “Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

We like that it lets Symphony newbies try out a live orchestra concert and sing along with songs they know by heart.

Another, albiet more expensive, Symphony event on Sept. 28, where film director Stephen Spielberg and film composer John Williams will share music and clips from their movies live and in person, also makes a great bet — if you can part with $250-$500 for a ticket.
