Symphony for the Schools Field Trips

Designed with Arizona students and teachers specifically in mind, our 2025/26 Season Symphony for the Schools Field Trip will highlight communication and teamwork by exploring how each section of the orchestra works together to create a unified musical experience. Recommended for Grades K-8.

Open Rehearsal Field Trips

Students and teachers are invited to a unique, behind-the-scenes opportunity to watch the Phoenix Symphony Musicians at work during a rehearsal. Observe how a professional orchestra works and prepares for a concert. Before the rehearsal, students can participate in a Q&A with musicians and guest artists. Recommended for Grades 4-12.

Symphony for the Schools Field Trips

Communication and Teamwork

Designed with Arizona students and teachers specifically in mind, our 2025/26 Season Symphony for the Schools Field Trip will highlight communication and teamwork by exploring how each section of the orchestra—strings, winds, brass and percussion—works together to create a unified musical experience. Featuring Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, students will discover how the conductor and the musicians use non-verbal communication during performances.

Recommended for Grades K-8.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • As a courtesy to the musicians and performers, please arrive early and be seated prior to the start of the performance.
  • Please bring a printed copy of your confirmation. A copy of your confirmation can be found on phoenixsymphony.org by logging into your account
  • Please read your field trip FAQ’s and bus driver information.
  • Concerts are for any type of public, private, charter, parochial, home school or alternative education group.
  • Seating is general admission. Reservations are on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • Thanks to generous support from the community, admission is free!

  • Symphony Hall Field Trip Bag Policy:
    • Teachers and Chaperones ONLY are permitted to bring in diaper or medical bags

Education Open Rehearsal Field Trips

  • As a courtesy to the musicians, please arrive early and be seated prior to the start of the rehearsal. All open rehearsals are “working” rehearsals and therefore the program or pieces may not be played in its entirety.

Thursday, October 16, 2025 at Symphony Hall

Concert Program:

  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Exsultate, jubilate
  • Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 4
  • Carlos Simon: AMEN!

Associate Conductor Alex Amsel leads this program with two pieces inspired by faith. Soprano Liv Redpath joins to sing Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, depicting a child’s vision of heaven. This remarkable program begins with Carlos Simon’s AMEN!an exuberant piece inspired by Pentecostal Church music, reflecting the composer’s upbringing.

Scheherazade and Sandoval

Thursday, November 20, 2025 at Symphony Hall

Concert Program:

  • Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade
  • Arturo Sandoval: Trumpet Concerto No. 2
  • Samuel Barber: Second Essay for Orchestra

Lidiya Yankovskaya returns to conduct Rimsky-Korsakov’s beloved Scheherazade, inspired by Arabian Nights featuring concertmaster soloist Rolf HaasTen-time Grammy Award Winner and 2024 Kennedy Center Honoree Arturo Sandoval performs his very own Trumpet Concerto No. 2, inspired by his Latin Jazz roots and his love of Rachmaninoff. Samuel Barber’s Second Essay for Orchestra rounds out the program.

Summer Breeze: Yacht Rock Classics

Friday, January 30, 2026 at Orpheum Theatre

Set sail on a musical journey where the smooth sounds of the ’70s and ’80s come to life in a unique orchestral experience. Let the elegant strings and brassy sounds sweep you away as this concert blends together the lush harmonies and iconic melodies of yacht rock legends like Hall & Oates, Toto, Christopher Cross, The Doobie Brothers, Jimmy Buffett and Steely Dan.

Celebrating America at 250: Gershwin, Copland & More

Thursday, February 26, 2026 at Symphony Hall

Concert Program: 

  • Charles Ives: Variations on “America”
  • George Gershwin: Piano Concerto in F
  • Mason Bates: The Rhapsody of Steve Jobs
  • Aaron Copland: Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo

Mélisse Brunet returns to conduct Copland’s iconic Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo, Ives’ Variations on “America” and Bates’ The Rhapsody of Steve Jobs. Stewart Goodyear returns as soloist in Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, a 100-year-old work that fuses jazz, ragtime, and classical music into a sensational piece, rounding out this American celebration in music.

Troupe Vertigo: Cirque Carmen

Friday, May 8, 2026 at Orpheum Theatre

The Phoenix Symphony performs music from Bizet’s Carmen (KBACH TOP 100) while Troupe Vertigo dazzles with acrobatics and spellbinding feats of athleticism, blending beauty, humor, and skill. This thrilling stage production evokes the spirit of a traveling circus, capturing the essence of Bizet’s Europe and America’s circus tradition.
